EeeMC 10.04.2

MythTV based on Ubuntu with XBMC added. Basically it is a fully setup Linux system with all of the necessary script changes and sudoers authorities completed. So with minimal setup requirements the user will have an excellent HTPC based on the Ubuntu 10.04 base.

What's New in This Release:

1.  Added a script to stop XBMC being shutdown by MythTV.  Even though I have incorporated XBMC have not really had the time to use this facility.  It wasn't till I decided to listen to Shoutcast that I found that this problem occurred.

2.  A second version of the EeeMC theme, called EeeMC Blue, is included.  I have made changes to the theme such as having the time appear on more screens. Also adding the bar graph, reference disc space available, to the Watch Recordings screen.  As you can delete recordings on this screen saves having to access the Delete Recordings screen.  Also added file size, see screen print.

3. Incorporated changes so that the system can be closed down by the Menu selection on the MythWelcome screen.

4. This release includes a high quality dedicated EeeMC splash screen.  Works with all NVIDIA drivers and should also work with ATI drivers as well.

5.  Attached a selection of prints showing the EeeMC Blue screens.

6. Iincludes all the latest updates for Ubuntu 10.04, MythTV and XBMC as at 16 May 2010.

7. Latest NVIDIA drivers installed, 195.36.24.

8. AU, ALSA Upgrade, versions available with the latest ALSA Sound Package 1.0.23-2, http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page.

The i386 link has been updated to a later version, as of 17 May 2010, to cover changes as above.

Note: This download is an .iso file which needs to be burned to DVD.

Installation,

Read information on Home Page.

Install Live DVD first and then access  System > Administration > Install RELEASE.

If you have any NVIDIA Driver problems,

1. Make sure you have allocated a root password.

2. Restart your system and access Grub Recovery Mode by holding down the Shift key.

3. Access Recovery > Netroot and enter your root password when prompted.

4. Enter telinit 3, and login as root.

5. Enter cd /home/user/Downloads

user will be your user name.

6. Enter sudo sh ./N --uninstall

When you enter the N press the tab key and the system will enter the full driver name.  This depends on you not having deleted the driver from the Downloads folder.

7. Otherwise at step 5,  just enter, sudo nvidia-uninstall instead of cd /home/user/Downloads

8. Enter reboot

9. Then acess System > Administration > Hardware Drivers.

10. This will show incorrectly that the latest NVIDIA drivers are installed.  Select Remove driver, and once process completed, select Activate driver.  A system restart will then be required.

I have been playing around with an Afatech af9015 based dvb tuner card, and had conflicts with the NVIDIA driver  that had been installed, not through the process as at 9.

I have since realized that it was a firmware problem, not the NVIDIA Drivers.  Used System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and installed the firmware using that method.  This fixed the issues.

Large EeeMC at startup and closing,

If you are having trouble with a large EeeMC at startup and closing apply the following fix.  I think it is only happening with the AMD installations.

Fixing EeeMC resolution,

Step 1:

Access System > Administration > Synaptic and complete a Full Removal of v86d.

Complete the following steps as root.

Step 2:

gedit /etc/default/grub

- Replace the following line (line number 9):

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset video=uvesafb:mode_option=1280x1024-24,mtrr=3,scroll=ywrap"

with this one:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

- Replace the following line (line number 18):

GRUB_GFXMODE=1280x1024

with this one:

#GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480

Save the file and close it!

Step 3:

gedit /etc/initramfs-tools/modules

Delete the following line at the end of the file:

uvesafb mode_option=1280x1024-24 mtrr=3 scroll=ywrap

Save the file and close it!

Step 4:

rm /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash

Step 5:

sudo update-grub2

Step 6:

sudo update-initramfs -u

Step 7:

Reboot your computer. When the system starts, you should see a better looking EeeMC logo!
